Network with sports management companies like Columbia, Rossignol and Intersport

The competitive sports industry requires future managers who already possess a very good understanding of the characteristics of the sports industry; its culture, future opportunities, the challenges it faces etc so that they can quickly make an impact within the organisation. Networking with professionals within the sports industry provides this key insight, so those wishing to break into the industry need to be armed with both the adequate skills and industry contacts.

Students of EMLYON Business School’s MSc in Sports Industry Management take part in company visits, networking events and expert panels with sports and outdoor industry companies such as Babolat, Olympique Lyonnais, Decathlon and the IOC from day one, honing their networking capabilities and building personal connections to help land those competitive opportunities. Many of the professors of the sports management programme are also key players in the industry, such as Pascal Clausse, Vice President Global Retail of Amer Sports Group and Jean Luc Diard, CEO and Founder of HOKA, who along with all other sports industry professionals, are always willing to share their knowledge and advice.

During their second semester in Annecy, the heart of the outdoor industry, students have contact with professionals from brands such as Salomon, The North Face, Adidas and Patagonia thanks to the programme’s partnership with the Outdoor Sports Valley, a leading trade and industry cluster bringing together over 200 international sports and outdoor industry brands. EMLYON Business School’s Careers Services also provide campus Career Days and Forums to provide internship and job opportunities to the cohort.

Finally the cohort’s Asian semester in Shanghai gives students the opportunity to make international contacts in the sports industry, as well as act as In-Company consultants for a Chinese sports organisation to understand Chinese cultural and working practices, critical for the future of the sports industry in this world region.

Close-up on students’ experience during 2015 ISPO Munich

Students recently attended ISPO Munich 2015, the leading international exhibition for the sports industry and had the privilege of attending exclusive meetings with CEO’s and leading executives from key international sporting brands such as Columbia, Hi-Tec, Salewa, Rossignol, Intersport, Oakley and more. This experience proved to be an excellent networking opportunity for the MSc in Sports Industry Management cohort, giving them invaluable exposure to leading industry decision makers from major sports management companies who were all very open to sharing their knowledge and advise the cohort about how to break into this highly coveted sector.
Held over four days, ISPO Munich saw 2,585 exhibitors come together to present their latest innovative offerings in sports equipment and apparel, with over 80,000 professionals visiting the exhibition from more than 100 countries.

Sports management companies ranged in size, product type and industry sector. For example, the cohort met Franz Julen, CEO of Intersport, the world’s largest sports retail, present in 44 countries with a retail turnover of €10.3 billion in order to understand the factors affecting the retail giant. Students were also able to understand how new, dynamic organisations are disrupting the industry with innovation. For example, the cohort met CEO Didi Serena and Creative Director Nico Serena of KJUS, manufacturers of award-winning high performance ski wear, whose use of lightweight fabrics in ski jackets was a world's first in 2004.

All senior sports and outdoor industry professionals were very willing to answer the cohort’s questions about their organisation, industry and career path, as well as share their advice for launching a career in the sports and outdoor industry. Company meetings at ISPO 2015 included:

  • Franco Fogliato, Senior Vice President Europe of Columbia Sportswear
  • Sylvain Noailly, Marketing Director of Rossignol Group
  • Franz Julen, CEO of Intersport
  • Olivier Cantet, European Chief Executive of Oakley
  • Robbert de Kock, Secretary General of World Sporting Goods Federation
  • Ed van Wezel, CEO of Hi-Tec
  • Vlad Moroz, co-founder, co-owner and Director of Red Fox
  • Reiner Gerstner, Brand & Marketing Director of Salewa
  • Erich Weitzmann, CEO of Reusch
  • Antonio Dus, CEO of Vibram
  • Vesa Luhtanen, CEO of Luhta
  • Claes Broqvist, Sales Director of Odlo Sportswear
  • Didi + Nico Serena, CEO and Creative Director of KJUS
  • Martin Kössler, Chairman of Bergans
  • Steve Veytia, CEO of Hyperice
  • Alistair Cameron, Chief Executive of Asics Europe and Chairman of Haglöfs

MSc in Sports Industry Management students also had some time to explore the 104,940 square meters of exhibition space at ISPO Munich and network with over 2,500 exhibitors. Many sports management companies organised social events after the show officially closed, giving the students the chance to meet with professionals in a more relaxed setting and get a feel for the brands that they might like to work for after graduating from the sports management school.
